I am wondering if anyone has ever considered what it might mean if social workers unionized. While I have mentioned this to a professor in my DSW recently and received some pushback, the reality is that unionization would also mean lobbying power. Why is that important? Well, because like other unions (NYSNA, 1199, etc.) it would mean that we could only then ensure standards for our work settings as well as perhaps have our own insurance. So many of us work for agencies where we are not happy, but we have to because we need the health insurance. Unionizing would mean providing this to participating members as well as an education fund, etc. I know this is a lofty goal, but as an Aquarius, I'm always trying to shake up existing systems and revolutionize them. I'd love to know if anyone else has thoughts on this.
